Rapha Rides Oakland

Well, not literally.  But, Rapha shot by Alison and Adm rides Oakland!  OK, let me back up a moment.  Lately, Adm has really been into riding his bike, and lucky for him, we have a whole slew of friends who are hardcore cyclists.  One in particular, our friend and neighbor Rob, introduced us to Rapha a couple of years ago.  Rapha is a high-end bicycle clothing company based in Europe, and they produce catalogs that have amazingly beautiful photography.  Last year, we decided to do a Rapha-inspired photo shoot with Rob (in his Rapha gear) in our own Oakland hills, which in my opinion are just as beautiful as some of those European landscapes that are featured in the the real Rapha catalogs.

This was unlike any other shoot we've done, and it was just a personal shoot for us to have fun with.  We went up to the hills really early on a wet Sunday last February, when the roads were empty and slick with the rain.  Adm and I took turns driving the car in front of Rob, who rode behind us.  We each spent time hanging out of the back of our car (luckily it's a hatchback), gripping onto the sides while taking photos.  Katy, Rob's wife, acted as our stylist, and we all had a blast turning the Oakland hills into our studio.  There are so many other great rides in the Bay Area that we can't wait to go out again!  All of the photos in this set were taken by both Adm and me.

Joyce + Jake Engaged

Joyce and Jake's engagement session was our last photo shoot for 2010, and I gotta say, it was pretty incredible. We wandered all throughout Half Moon Bay - we started with a stroll through downtown where we stopped in for drinks at a local restaurant, and despite initial curious looks from the wait staff, once they saw how sweet Joyce and Jake were with one another they let us transform their outdoor patio into an impromptu photo studio.  Next, just down the road, we scaled a fence to climb into a gorgeous pumpkin patch and corn field that provided the perfect backdrop as the sun streamed in between the mountains.  For our third stop, just a quick car ride away, we arrived at the beach just in time for a beautiful golden sunset in the exact spot where Jake had proposed to Joyce.  If all of that wasn't enough, we capped the night at the Ritz with a bottle of sparkling rose in front of a crackling fire.  It's shoots like these where I'm like, seriously, this is our job?

Joyce and Jake couldn't not have been more fun and easier to work with.  These two are doing a long-distance relationship at the moment - Joyce is in California and Jake is in Australia, so they really seemed to cherish every moment they spent together.  Furthermore, Joyce brought along her little sister, Alice, who was photo assistant and stylist extraordinaire.  We had a blast with these three - thanks for making the end of our 2010 so memorable!

2010 Highlights: A Year in Review!

I can't believe we're already ringing in a New Year.  2010 has been a complete whirlwind, and at the end of the year, when things are starting to slow down and we're getting ready to breathe and relax for a few months, I always like to reflect on what we've done and think about what direction we're headed in.  In pulling out images for the highlight slideshow, I can see how our style is evolving and what areas to focus on for the future.  This is part of what makes our job so fun - constantly critiquing one another and pushing each other to do better.  We absolutely love what we do and are so incredibly lucky to work with such wonderful people who trust their memories with us.  We are so grateful for each and every couple that lets us into their lives on such an important day, and we just hope that the care we take in creating their images is a true reflection of how important they are to us.

The slideshow includes images from every wedding and engagement session we photographed this past year.  Music is "Perfect In My Mind" by Gold Motel.

Ellen + Brendon in Charlotte, NC

I LOVE this couple!  Ellen is one of my best friends from college and she could not have found a more perfect partner for herself than Brendon.  It's always such a privilege to witness our clients' weddings, but it's truly magical watching two people you know and love declare their love for one another, especially when they've included passages from The Velveteen Rabbit in their ceremony.  Everything about their wedding came together so perfectly and with so many contributions from their friends and family so that it truly was a day for all of us to show our love and support for these two fabulous people.  Ellen has always been a dear friend, and she is one of the most impassioned and compassionate people I know so it was a real honor to be able to participate in and contribute to her day.  I doubled as a woman of honor and photographer so Adm and our good friend Whitney Shefte made a number of the images.

I may be a little biased, but Ellen was one of the most gorgeous brides I've ever seen!  She looked like a brunette Veronica Lake and was absolutely stunning!

Ellen's best woman, Shannon, designed and created all of the floral arrangements and bouquets, which were amazing!

Ellen, I love you and couldn't be happier for you!

Nicole + Russell in Carmel Valley, CA

What an amazing wedding Nicole and Russell had!  We were treated to one of the prettiest venues we've been to - Bernardus Lodge and Winery, which is nestled in gorgeous Carmel Valley.  Throughout the ceremony, I kept thinking it felt like I was in the middle of a Tuscan villa in Italy.  We also had such a fun time working with Nicole and Russell - Nicole was so happy, I mean her smile and laugh were completely infectious!  Nicole and Russell were both really funny, and the way they interacted with each other definitely felt a little reminiscent of the way Adm and I interact with each other - a little biting, but completely loving at the same time.  : )  As an added surprise, one of our very first couples, Hillary and Matt, were guests at the wedding!  Nicole and Russell, thanks so much for having us along for your wedding - we wish you two all the best!
